The Westchester Mechanics Association held their monthly meeting on April 6, 2017. WMA President Dennis McSpedon Jr. announced the presentation of the Timothy Dann Community Service Award. President McSpedon made a motion to suspend the meeting which was seconded and carried. Harry Dann, the brother of Timothy Dann was called forward to explain the origin of this award.
Timmy Dann was loved by his family, community and Local 3. Those three things were set as a very active part of his life. Timmy lived in the same area for his entire life. He believed strongly that being a part of something was helping whenever you are called upon. Having played basketball at Christ the King when he was younger, Timmy donated his time coaching after his playing days.
Being active with all of the clubs, five clubs decided to start this award for students going to college in his name. They include the Westchester Mechanics Association, Bronx Acorn, Sword of Light Pipe Band, Santiago Iglesias and Local 3 Motorcycle Club. All of the members of these clubs knew who he was and how he always helped those around him.
President Dennis McSpedon Jr. summoned the Sword of Light Pipe Band forward to lead this year’s recipient of the Timothy Dann Community Service Award. This year’s recipient is Taylor Smith. Her father is the President of the Sword of Light Pipe Band and was proudly standing in the crowd with other family members. Taylor Smith was picked because of how she most emulated Timmy Dann’s legacy. Taylor Smith thanked the crowd. She is currently a junior at Carmel High School. She also plays basketball and as a freshman was pulled up to the varsity team. She holds a 96% average and currently donates her time as a mentor and tutoring math. Taylor also donated time for 3rd, 4th and 5th grade CYO teams helping out wherever needed. She was recognized for earning 100% on her Geometry Honors Regents. This is the reason she has decided to follow a career as a math teacher. She is currently working with a friend now collecting donations whether it is money, food or clothing for the homeless. Taylor shows that hard work, determination and humility helps her to be a great person on the community and is why her parents are very proud.
