A Message from Business Manager Chris Erikson
The Democratic Party in New York City took a hard left turn last week, and now our mayor-elect needs to deliver. He certainly proposed some big-ticket items, and those who voted for him will expect him to deliver immediately. I feel like I’m in the Twilight Zone, with an avowed socialist taking the keys to the City of New York and a president in Washington, D.C., who appears to be content in his golden bubble, all while working Americans suffer the negative economic impact of his policies and his partisan politics. Our national government has been shut down for weeks, and ordinary people's lives are in chaos as they suffer.
There are many New Yorkers who didn’t vote for either Mamdani and the DSA or Sliwa, so the question arises as to where do they fit in in our two-party system? I’m asking that question too. Not in the MAGA extreme-right Republican Party and not in the extreme-left Democratic Party if it embraces socialism. I know I’m not alone. The moderate Democrats and the moderate Republicans together make up the majority in this country. We need to elect representatives who aren’t sheep, always in fear of losing their positions if they oppose a dictator who holds that threat over their heads for daring to even question or, God forbid, oppose his MAGA policies. On the Democratic side, we need those moderates who reject the DSA mantra for socialism and its furthest left tenets in the United States, who will continue to believe in the values of a democratic society that works for working people and businesses, advocating for strong unions, the rights to organize and collectively bargain, and a fairer tax system for all that will support a strong social safety net for the the working poor and those who are less fortunate than us. Livable wages, affordable health care, and a reliable social security system so that people can retire in dignity are what we need. Those and the rock solid rights that our founding fathers guaranteed – life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for all Americans.
I need a party that embraces all of that, without the extreme agendas on the edges of both parties right now made up of people who could care less about anyone else but themselves. We owe this to our children and future generations of Americans, to hopefully continue living in the greatest country in the world, in an America that we can all be proud of. Time to move the needle, brothers and sisters, and we need to keep the Union strong, before it’s too late.
