Vincent McElroen, financial secretary of Local 3 IBEW, was initiated into Local 3 in February 1970. A former member of the United States Naval Reserve since 1968, he was activated in September 1970 and served twenty-one months in Vietnam. He returned to Local 3 in February 1973 where he re-entered the “A” Apprentice Training Program and became a journeyman electrician in 1980. He is a graduate of the State University of New York’s Empire State College, Harry Van Arsdale Jr School of Labor Studies where he received an associate and a bachelor degree in labor studies. He was appointed as a Local 3 Business Representative November 11, 1985. He has served as the managing editor of the Electrical Union World since 1985 to present; Director of Organizing since 2000 and as Local 3’s Financial Secretary since August 2003.
He is a trustee of the Joint Industry Board of the Electrical Industry where he serves on numerous benefit funds as an employee representative. From 1999 through 2001he was an active participant in the development, editing and publishing of the book “Labor’s Champion,” a biography of Harry Van Arsdale Jr.
In 2000 he wrote and produced the award-winning video of the 100th Anniversary of Local 3 IBEW, titled, “I Am My Brother’s Keeper.”
He is the former Chairman NYS Labor Commissioners “Advisory Committee on Apprenticeship Taskforce” and is a member of the NYC Electrical Licensing Board since 1998 to present and a member NYC Code Revision Committee 2000 – 2012.
He has been recognized by the NYC Central Labor Council, Empire State College Harry Van Arsdale Jr School of Labor Studies, United Jewish Appeal Foundation, Israel Bonds and numerous fraternal organizations for his commitment to working men and women.
Married to his lovely wife Lorraine, he has two children, Hugh Vincent, an “A” journeymen; Meaghan, a veterinary technician and a step-daughter Stephanie Oyola employed by Time/Warner.
