Examining Board

Kevin Collins was elected to the Examining Board in May 2018.

Kevin was born in Queens and has been a lifelong resident of Electchester. He attended Jamaica High School and graduated in 1984.

Kevin started his apprenticeship in 1987 at the Hillside Yards and served with the Members Assistance Program. He graduated from the apprenticeship with a bachelor’s degree from SUNY Empire State College Harry Van Arsdale School of Labor Studies. He continued his education through classes provided by the Education and Cultural Trust Fund, taking almost every class that they have to offer.

Kevin became a safety instructor, and in 1998 he became an OSHA instructor teaching the 10 and 30-hour classes at the “A” apprenticeship school. From 2010 until 2018, he served as Chair of the Code Committee. He served as an instructor for the DBM for four and a half years, teaching 4th-year apprentices their hands-on motor controls and bootcamp.

Kevin graduated from the National Training Institute as an advanced studies student and master instructor for the apprenticeship school. He has worked as a proctor for the Examining Board for two years and is a mentor with the Mentor Program and MIJ Bootcamp.

Kevin has worked as a sub-foreman, foreman and shop steward. His most memorable job was working at the Electrical Industry Training Center in Long Island City. He felt inspired by being a part of this project that is fundamental to the future success of our industry and our union, working with so many talented people and seeing the dedication that our members have to their future.

Classes taken by Kevin at the Joint Board include Estimating, High Voltage Theory, Asbestos Handling, Confined Space, Scaffolding, HAZWOPER, Lead and Mercury Awareness, Blood-borne Pathogens and Lock Out Tag Out.
