Sign Division and Construction - Queens
David Sands was born in Queens on March 23, 1976, to his parents, John and Gail. He has three older sisters and one younger brother. Dave attended St. Matthias Catholic Academy and Monsignor McClancy High School in East Elmhurst. He then attended and received his Associate’s Degree from Queensborough Community College.
Dave is a first-generation electrician. He entered the Local 3 apprentice program in January 1998. In the spring of 2002, he received his associate degree from the Harry Van Arsdale Jr. School of Labor Studies at SUNY Empire State College. He completed the apprenticeship and became an “A” journeyman in 2003.
Effective on September 1, 2022, Dave was appointed Business Representative of both the “M” and Sign Divisions upon the retirement of John Baker, and he was assigned to the Construction Desk as well. At the General Membership meeting on October 12, 2023, Business Manager Christopher Erikson announced the retirement of Business Representative James Bua and appointed Dave Sands to Business Representative of the Construction Division in the borough of Queens.
Dave has worked on numerous jobs throughout Local 3’s jurisdiction as a journeyman, sub-foreman, and foreman. He has taken many courses offered by the Educational and Cultural Trust Fund including Citizenship Responsibility, Confined Space, Track Certification, supervisory training, Lockout/Tagout, OSHA 10, and OSHA 30.
Dave is a long-time member of the Allied Club of Queens. He has held the positions of corresponding secretary and political advisor and was the club’s treasurer and a member of the Board of Directors for the scholarship fund. Dave also serves on the Wage and Policy Committee of Local #3.
Dave has been an active member of his local community. In January 2009, he was elected as vice-president and treasurer of his homeowner’s association in Glendale, Queens. He was appointed by then-NYC Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley and Queens Borough President Melinda Katz to serve on Community Board 5. He served on the Land Use and Parks committees. For the past seven years, Dave has coached his kids’ basketball teams and served as athletic director for the St. Matthias basketball program for many years.
Dave currently resides in Middle Village, Queens. He is the proud dad of his three children, Samantha, Olivia and Josh.
