The Workers Memorial Day Mass brought together New York City’s construction workforce under one roof in St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Thursday, April 28. Local 3 was well-represented, with the Sword of Light Band and Catholic Council of Electrical Workers leading the hardhat procession. This year, the Mass was dedicated to 13 construction workers, an estimator, a small business owner, and those who died from COVID-19.

The hardhat Mass is an annual tradition for the NYC labor movement going back 15 years. It is presided over by Fr. Brian Jordan, OFM, who continued the tradition for his parish at St. Camillus in Silver Spring, Maryland this year on April 26. Workers Memorial Day is observed on April 28, the date on which the Occupational Safety and Health Act took effect in 1971.
