To celebrate Tom Suozzi’s victory in the special election for New York’s 3rd congressional district, Local 3 hosted a big party and meet-and-greet with Representative-elect Suozzi, Rep. Grace Meng (NY-6), and our sister locals from Long Island, Local 25 and Local 1049. Over a hundred IBEW members filled the Auditorium on Friday evening, February 23rd. After doors opened at 4:00 p.m. and more people arrived, photos from the campaign flashed on the big screens featuring volunteers getting out the vote and rallying with Labor for Suozzi over the past two months. Hot food and cold drinks were served by members of the St. George Association.
Once the program started, everyone looked up to see videos of media coverage and campaign ads from the very beginning in December through the victorious night on Tuesday, February 13th, showing the hard work that Suozzi, his supporters, and Local 3 put into getting him re-elected to Congress to stand up for our interests in Washington, D.C. Business Manager Christopher Erikson, Rep. Grace Meng, and Rep. Tom Suozzi addressed the room from the podium, and Majority Leader Hakeem Jeffries sent a message with deep appreciation for our efforts. They reminded everyone of the hard work that was put in by organized labor and our allies in community organizations, environmental groups, and other advocates, and how important it is to elect pro-labor representatives, especially considering the anti-union stances of the Republican majority in the House who are intent on taking back the Senate and the White House – unless we do something about it.
Let’s build on this momentum heading into the June primaries and the November general election. Make sure you are registered to vote at your current address, consider becoming a IBEW PAC contributor, and pay attention to communications from Local 3 and affiliated clubs regarding our efforts to get out the vote in these pivotal elections in the year ahead.
