It’s the end of an era in NYC, as the last public payphone was removed from the sidewalk at 7th Avenue and 50th Street in Times Square on May 23. The removal was completed by Local 3 signatory employer Hylan Datacom & Electrical, which has played a huge role in the LinkNYC initiative to replace payphones with free public wi-fi kiosks throughout the five boroughs.

These kiosks help bridge the “digital divide” by providing free high-speed Wi-Fi, free nationwide digital calling, access to government and social services, dissemination of city and community information, free advertising for local businesses, and USB ports for free device charging.
