Senate Republicans released their own proposal, the HEALS Act, in response to the HEROES Act passed by the House of Representatives in May.
The HEALS Act cuts down to $1 trillion, mostly for small businesses and a second round of stimulus checks. However, the so-called “plan” being pushed by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and his Republican colleagues does not include many of the things desperately needed right now, such as hazard pay for essential workers, new funding for states and municipalities battling the coronavirus and all its effects, or extended assistance for homeowners, renters, and the unemployed. In fact, the Senate’s inaction allowed the enhanced unemployment insurance from the CARES Act passed in March to expire for millions of people at the end of July. This is unacceptable!
Leading up to the Senate’s short summer session from July 20 to August 7, Local Union No. 3 asked active members and retirees, particularly in states with competitive upcoming elections, to call, write, and visit your Senators to voice support for the HEROES Act and opposition to the GROW Act. Now, we are asking you to do this again while adding your opposition to “McConnell’s Plan.” Together, our voices will make a difference.
