Working Theater has produced a “soundwalk” titled Sanctuary that allows listeners to experience the stories and sounds of the neighborhood surrounding the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine in uptown Manhattan. Until December 31, the “soundwalk” audio is available for free download or stream from iTunes and Spotify.
The Sanctuary soundwalk was union-made under a SAG-AFTRA collective agreement. It is 50-minutes long and can be enjoyed from home or on your favorite walking route.
The idea behind this art project is to create an immersive experience from sounds, interviews, and songs, and offer a peace of mind for listeners through these extremely difficult times, anywhere you are. It is part of Working Theater’s Five Boroughs/One City Initiative started in 2014. This program partners performing artists with local residents to develop, produce, and premier an original work focusing on working-class communities in each borough. One such play was Alternating Currents, which was made in collaboration with members of the Electchester community.
Founded in 1985, Working Theater creates performing arts for and about working-class people with the belief that “theater should not be a luxury.”
