On February 4, 2021, House Democrats reintroduced the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act of 2019. Almost exactly a year ago to the day, the House of Representatives passed the PRO Act 224-194, but it subsequently stalled in the Senate then under the Republican majority.
Now that the Senate and White House are in Democratic hands as a result of the 2020 elections and the hard work of organized labor in key battleground states, this important piece of legislation finally can become law of the land and make a huge difference for union and non-union workers alike. It would undo a lot of the damage caused by the Taft-Hartley Act since 1947 and so-called “right to work” laws, while reinforcing the right to organize and collectively bargain in the workplace.
Lawmakers promised to make the PRO Act a priority and starting in the next few weeks will be the time to hold them to their word. Educate yourself on the PRO Act because you will be asked to make a phone call or write a letter to your representative in Congress to express your support for the PRO Act and why it is needed now more than ever.
