On Thursday, May 30th, the U.S. Department of Energy and NYSERDA unveiled the Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates (HEAR) Program, made possible with funding from the federal Inflation Reduction Act. New York is the first state in the nation to implement this federal tax credit program, which will expand NYSERDA’s EmPower+ incentives for low-income households making energy efficiency and electrification upgrades. NYSERDA is currently applying to expand the additional tax credits to moderate-income households and larger multifamily residential buildings.
The goal is to lower costs for homeowners and renters, improve the environment and energy grid, and create good-paying jobs in the construction, utility, and manufacturing industries.
The announcement was hosted at the Andromeda Community Initiative in Long Island City, Queens, near the IBEW/NECA Electrical Industry Training Center. Invited guests, including members and representatives of Local 3 and the Educational & Cultural Trust Fund of the Electrical Industry (E&C), were joined by U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, White House Senior Advisor John Podesta, Governor Kathy Hochul, NYSERDA President and CEO Doreen Harris, and housing and community advocates. A roundtable discussion focused on consumers/end users and the application process was held afterward at the same location, featuring E&C Director Michael Yee on the expert panel.
