The Jacob K. Javits Convention Center is one of the busiest convention centers in the country, and work there has steadily improved over the last two years for both large trade shows and smaller industry events, especially compared to activity during the Covid-19 pandemic. While a regular workforce handles a significant amount of the work there, unemployed members help to man Local 3’s jurisdiction and alleviate the spikes in required manpower typical within the trade show and convention industry.
This setup has been a boon for both unemployed members to earn wages and benefits while out of work and for our benefit plans as tens of thousands of man-hours are worked above and beyond what the regular workforce handles.
Now that the work opportunity in the Construction Division has improved with significantly less unemployment, the Union still has an obligation to provide manpower to the Javits Center to ensure successful shows and events. If you are unemployed or receive a call from the JIB Employment Department, please make every effort to answer the call to work at the Javits Center. Additionally, construction contractors may need to release some of their workforce occasionally to work at the Javits Center and man our jurisdiction.
To work at the Javits Center, journeymen need to take the Exhibition Wiring class. Please call 718-591-4000 ext. 402 to place your name on the list for the next available class.
