It’s not just Republicans who should worry about the vindictiveness, prejudices and narrow-mindedness of the GOP presidential field, a top union leader says. It’s all of us.
Admittedly, J. David Cox, president of the American Federation of Government Employees, heads an union that already endorsed former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for the Democratic presidential nomination. Nevertheless, Cox, a retired VA psychological nurse whose gentle drawl shows his North Carolina purple-state roots, is concerned about the other party, too. Here’s what he said at a wide-ranging press interview session on Feb. 8:
“There is not a Republican candidate running that has not said they would annihilate not just federal unions, but every union in this country. I think that would be a serious, serious situation,” he told reporters. If one of the GOP hopefuls wins, he adds, “God help us all. They’ve butchered on one another and they’ll butcher like that on the American people. I’ve never seen any election like this in my lifetime.”
