On the morning of Saturday, December 17, the Local 3 New York City chapter of the Electrical Workers Minority Caucus participated in a day of service at the New Covenant Dominion Cathedral in the Bronx. Volunteers came from the Latimer Association, Amber Light Society, SIES, AACS, and Bronx Acorn, led by club presidents Eric Rollins, Keisha Spradley, and Anthony Mercado, and joined by Business Representative Rick Rollins and Executive Board member Tanya Ferguson. Some materials were donated by Local 3 signatory contractor Five Star Electric.
With the support of Harry Van Arsdale Jr. and Local 3, the EWMC was established in 1974 at the 30th IBEW International Convention to address issues of inequality and discrimination within the union and the electrical industry. Today, the NYC chapter comprises the Lewis H. Latimer Progressive Association, Santiago Iglesias Educational Society, Asian American Cultural Society, and the Amber Light Society. At this year’s day of service at New Covenant in the Bronx, over 40 brothers and sisters volunteered to clear out garbage and perform light electrical work in an effort to create more usable space for the church group so they can increase their capacity to provide services to their constituency.
