Community Boards, also known as the “entry level of local government” in New York City, make important decisions regarding public services, land use, and recommendations for the city budget. Each Community Board – there are 59 across the five boroughs (map) – has up to 50 volunteer members on two-year terms appointed by the Borough President. In addition, Community Board members must be New York City residents and live, work, or have a “significant interest” in the community, such as owning property or attending school there.
Due to their potential impact on work opportunities and quality of life, the NYC Central Labor Council runs the Community Board Initiative (CBI) educating and encouraging union members to engage with their Community Boards and/or apply to serve on one. Each borough has its own application and deadline, as follows:
- Bronx (due March 9th)
- Brooklyn (due February 14th)
- Manhattan (due February 28th)
- Queens (due February 14th)
- Staten Island (accepted year-round)
