Joseph J. McByrne Jr.

Joseph J. McByrne Jr. was initiated into Local 3 at the age of 16. McByrne was first employed at the EJ Electric Ship Yard in Whitestone. At 17 he enlisted in the US Navy and was discharged in 1947 when he reentered the electrical industry. Since returning to the industry he worked in the Fixture Division as a well as the “A” construction division.
Active his entire life in the affairs of Local 3, Joe served his apprenticeship and became an “A” Journeyman serving as a splicer, foreman, sub-foreman and job steward. In 1974 he was appointed to the Executive Board of Local 3 and won election to the Board in 1975 and every three years thereafter serving in this capacity for 18 years. In 1985 he was appointed a Business Representative by Business Manager Thomas Van Arsdale. He served as the Construction Representative in both the Borough of Queens and Downtown Manhattan.
McBryne represented Local 3 at numerous IBEW Conventions as an elected delegate. As a rank and file member he was active in Boy Scout Troop 333, on organizing drives within the manufacturing division, Lamp and Shade Division, Construction Division as well as in the organizing of Local 1199 Hospital Workers Union and Local 3036 Taxi Drivers Union, SEIU.
Joseph J. McByrne Jr. was integral to the smooth operation of Local 3 and the many success the union has had in bettering the lives of workers and their families employed in the electrical industry. His input, counsel and advice on an everyday scale will be surely missed.
Joseph is survived by his wife Lily, children Joseph III, James and Irene, and grandchildren Ryan, Scott, James, Kevin, Krista, Karl, Samantha and Eric.
