Prior to May 5, 2017 there were limits to how much a union member could deduct “union dues and other contributions or assessments” from their annual tax filing. Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a bill into law this past May that removes the limits once placed on union members wanting to deduct dues at tax time. The new law will cover public and private sector union workers. Categorized under “Job Expense and Certain Miscellaneous Deductions” Line 21 of Schedule A deductions is available when itemizing deductions as opposed to Form 1040 Standard Deduction. This law essentially positions Mr. Cuomo as an advocate for public and private sector organized labor.
