Over 100 union electricians – including ‘A’ journeypersons, apprentices, high-voltage splicers, engineers, and welders – with NYECA employer Mass Electric Construction Company are currently working on the Champlain Hudson Power Express’s converter station in Astoria, Queens. This phase in CHPE’s construction started over two years ago, and so far they have installed over 145,000 feet of conduit and 540,000 feet of cable. The CHPE transmission line will send hydropower produced in Quebec, Canada, down through New York State to a converter station in Astoria, and then a cable will connect to a substation in Long Island City. It will supply about 20% of New York City’s clean energy, reduce air pollutants, and create up to 3,000 secondary jobs.
