Established in 2011, the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) is the federal agency overseeing safety and environmental protection related to the offshore energy industry. Think of OSHA, but for work done offshore on the U.S. Outer Continental Shelf (OCS). BSEE will take on an increasingly pivotal role as the offshore wind industry takes off in the northeastern U.S. from Maine to Virginia.
To give them a better sense of the electrical work Local 3 members do every day and will potentially do in the future, Local 3 and the Joint Industry Board of the Electrical Industry hosted a tour of the Training Center in Long Island City, Queens with BSEE Director Kevin M. Sligh Sr. and representatives of our training partners at IWNL Energy, RelyOn Nutec, and Vinci VR. After introductions and presentations, the group toured the state-of-the-art training facility, led by Educational and Cultural Trust Fund Director Michael Yee, Associate Director Erland Castillo, Safety Director Cornelius Skeahan, Examining Board member George White, Assistant Business Managers Richard Duva (Manufacturing and Supply Divisions) and Joseph Santigate (Construction Division), and President Tom Cleary. By the end of the tour, BSEE Director Sligh left the Training Center impressed by the apprenticeship, certifications, and continued educational benefits that Local 3 and the JIB offer for union members to be the best they can be in every facet of the electrical industry, including offshore wind.
