March 6th, marked the day on which the Allied Union Club of Queens, held its annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration. The Allied Club is celebrating its 84th year and over 40 years of hosting this joyous event. Many were in attendance to honor this year’s “Man of the Year,” Business Representative John Baker.
Among the attendees, were over 30 honored guests of Local 3, including Business Manager Christopher Erikson, President John E. Marchell and Queens Representative James Bua. A large number of Representative Baker’s family were also present to show their support for the man of the hour. Event chairman Joseph Magel commenced the festivities and the program began with Local 3’s own talented Sword of Light Pipe Band, announced by Thomas Gallery. Following the grand entrance, local dignitaries were on hand to address the crowded room. Public Advocate Letitia James, Senator Toby Ann Stavisky and Councilman Rory Lanceman offered wise words of support and encouragement. City Council members Barry Grodenchik, Peter Koo and Elizabeth Crowley awarded Brother Baker with a citation. Brother Baker was also honored with a proclamation by Assembly members Michael Simanowitz and Marge Markey. Christopher Erikson, presented the “Man of the Year” with a plaque, in addition to gifts given by Thomas McCann, including a Waterford crystal clock.
Business Representative Baker graciously accepted the award and thanked both the Allied Club for the award and Business Manager Erikson for granting him the opportunity to represent two divisions and serve the membership. Mr. Baker’s career is highlighted by his many achievements. He has served on the Wage & Policy Committee, served as President of the Sportsman’s Club and plays an important role, as managing editor in composing our monthly newspaper, The Electrical Union World.
The celebration was complete with traditional Irish food prepared by Chef Terry Cleary, who directed a staff of over 40 volunteers, including the children of the Allied Club members, who did a wonderful job serving the hungry guests. The Cunningham Brothers Band and a D.J performed Irish classics, popular dance music and rock ’n’ roll. Opera singer and fourth-year apprentice, Kyle Viveritto, delighted the crowd when he performed a beautiful rendition of “Danny Boy.” Then to round out the evening’s entertainment were the lovely traditional Irish dancers from the Donny Golden School of Irish Dance that captivated the audience with their lively jigs.
