Local Union No. 3 is asking you to submit public comments to the BOEM for an offshore wind project in New England that could affect future work opportunities for our members. The public comments period ends Monday, July 27.
Vineyard Wind 1 is an 800 MW project to be located more than 15 miles off the coast of Massachusetts. It will be the nation’s first commercial-scale offshore wind project in federal waters, providing clean, renewable, and cost-effective electricity to 400,000 homes and businesses in Massachusetts. The project is expected to add 3,600 jobs to the local economy, many of them unionized.
The alternative proposals for regulations currently under consideration by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) threaten the viability of the industry, which is set to grow in New York State as well. They will result in substantial delays, technical challenges, cost increases to consumers, dangerous transit lanes, and more environmental impacts from offshore wind development. All of this threatens to significantly delay the 20GW of offshore wind projects already in development.
The future of offshore wind projects and the renewable energy industry are at stake. This would mean the loss of a new billion-dollar industry and potentially thousands of good union jobs in construction, electrical work, and utilities in New York and up and down the East Coast.
